Member Profile: Coast Road Palms

Coast Road Palms are one of the latest nurseries to join NGIWA and this month we took a behind the scenes look at one of Perth’s leading tropical plant growers.

Tucked off Bennett Springs Drive, Bennett Springs Beechboro, Coast Road Palms began from some very humble beginnings in 1987 on 10 acres of what can only be described as desert sands. Today, what started out as a hobby, Lou and Connie Varischetti, owners of Coast Road Palms, have now turned into a thriving family run business.

“Our palm collecting began some thirty years ago when we became members of the Palm & Cycad Society of QLD” Lou explains. “In those days quarantine wasn’t as strict as it is today and you could order seed via mail. So after planting the usual Palms such as Cocos, Roebelinii, Bangalow, Cotton & Date palms we wanted a bit of variety. We planted hundreds of unusual palms, some were successful and others not”.

Qualified horticulturists and sons Stephen and Daniel are now at the helm of the business and are excited about the prospect of taking the nursery into a new era.

Daniel and Stephen are the perfect fit to ensure this nursery goes forward. Coming from the next generation of nurseryman, they are already in tune with present day trends and although their customer base is largely landscapers and sales predominately through their retail outlet, they also have an impressive niche within the restaurant and bar scene where they supply mature specimen plants for indoor use.

“Joining NGIWA was the next step in our development and although we have a good understanding of growing plants, we felt it was really important we built up our network within the industry and also ensure that small independent specialist nurseries like ourselves continue to be the beacon of our industry”, Daniel said.

A visit to the nursery is a real must with impressive mature displays of palms, cycads, bamboos, gingers and over 30 varieties of Heliconias. The very well stocked nursery has many of these plants for sale as well as a wide selection of foliage plants for the indoor market. You could quite easily think you are standing in a Queensland rainforest.

Coast Road Palms are no stranger to NGIWA. For the past 5 years they have been attendees as exhibitors at the Perth Garden Festival and have won a number of awards for their eye-catching exhibits often with a dinosaur Jurassic theme.
