Pest & Disease Workshop 2017
We had a fantastic response and turnout with over 35 members packed into the nursery at Men of The Trees, Hazelmere taking part in our annual Pest & Disease Management workshop with Andrew Manners and John Duff from the Department of Agriculture & Fisheries Qld.
Despite being a very hot day, it was an extremely informative program with all participants able to listen to present day diagnostic problems facing nurseries today, as well as having the opportunity to discuss personal problems facing their own nursery with experienced entomologists Andrew and John.
Key areas covered included Pest ID tools, field magnification, processes for identifying causes of unknown problems, NGIA biosecurity support and information on Grow Help Australia. Along with formal presentations, members participated in a site visit of the nursery where it was demonstrated how important biosecurity and quarantine operations within such a facility are.
In the afternoon session, members were presented with a number of mock diagnostic problems to test their skills in the management of pest and diseases and put into practice what they had learned from the earlier sessions.
Thank you to Andrew Manners and John Duff for making the trip over to WA to present this workshop, and to Hort Innovation and Nursery Fund for making it possible. Huge thanks to James Teare and his crew at Men Of The Trees in Hazelmere for allowing us to hold the workshop at their fantastic nursery and allowing us to take over their tea room!
